Request a Luxury Cruise QuoteA good butler is the closest thing at sea to having a friend on the crew. Here is what a cruise butler does, and how to make the most of one.
What a Cruise Butler Actually Does
Packing and unpacking
Many butlers will unpack your cases on embarkation day and pack them again at the end, if you wish.
In-suite dining
Serving breakfast on the veranda, or a full dinner course by course in your suite.
Reservations
Booking specialty restaurants, spa appointments and shows so you never queue.
Pre-arrival requests
Stocking your bar with what you drink, arranging flowers or setting up a celebration.
Pressing and shoe shine
Small services that matter on dressier evenings.
Hosting
Setting up canapés and drinks when you invite new friends to your suite.
Which Suites Come With a Butler

Practice varies widely. Silversea is known for butler service in every suite. On many other luxury lines, butlers serve the higher suite categories, and standard suites rely on an attentive stateroom team instead. On large ships, butlers are usually part of the suite enclave program and limited to its top categories.
A butler is not the only measure of service. On a small luxury ship with a high crew-to-guest ratio, bartenders, waiters and stewards often remember your preferences within a day or two, and you may barely notice the difference. On a big ship, though, a butler can be what turns a large resort into a personal experience.
Making the Most of Butler Service
- Introduce yourself early and share preferences: favorite drinks, dietary needs, the time you like breakfast.
- Use them for restaurant and spa bookings on the first afternoon, when the best times go quickly.
- Ask about in-suite dining from the main restaurant menu — many butlers can serve it course by course.
- Mention any celebration in advance. Butlers are good at quiet surprises.
- Be specific and kind. A clear request is easier to deliver well than a vague one.
Butler Service Questions
Do I need to tip the butler?
On lines where gratuities are included in the fare, tipping is not expected, although some guests choose to give an extra thank-you for exceptional service. On lines where tips are not included, follow the line’s own guidance.
Is a butler the same as a cabin steward?
No. Your stateroom attendant looks after housekeeping. A butler handles service and personal requests: in-suite dining, unpacking, reservations and the many small things that make a voyage easier.
Which lines include a butler in every suite?
Silversea is well known for offering butler service in every suite. On many other lines butlers are attached to the higher suite categories only, so check the specific category.
